A "voluntary collective tip jar" - if it were totally streamlined and put every aspects of the control/distribution of the funds in the hands of its users, a segment of people might very well embrace it.

I for one would prefer to pay for (support) A/V content on the basis of how long/how many times I've viewed/listened to it. For things I enjoy, I'd like to be able to kick up a little more. For things I don't, I'd like to be able to retract my financial support.

Very tempting but I think in the end I'd rather have PRX in charge of funneling my money to independent producers than Apple: http://blogs.law.harvard.edu/mediarepublic/2008/04/28/click-here-to-save-nprthe-world/

Great idea. People are known to stuff dollar bills (and 20-dollar bills) into the glass cases at the Smithsonian... this would take even less effort.

Jake, it is good to read this post from you. I've been doing a lot of work on the coast of Mississippi, post Katrina. There is a huge need to get the issues out there. Some you may have read in the NYT, like Gov. Barbour redirecting HUD funds to rebuild the port rather than people's homes, as it was originally intended. If there are people with the new consortium you think I could contact, I'd really like to. Awareness of these issues is important.

Jake,

The video was inspirational!

(Sorry you had to get the flu so that I could enjoy it...)

I'm a 20 year veteran of commercial radio who ran screaming from the experience five years ago.

I've wised up. Now I'm an independent producer, with a new show called "The Real Life Survival Guide", heard Sundays at 3 on Connecticut Public Broadcasting.

I subscribe to the RSS feed of your blog, and that's how I discovered the video.

I just finished producing this Sunday's show (only the second) and decided to put together an 11 minute "scoped" demo. I and was wondering if I could e-mail you the MP3-- I'd love your feedback.

Please let me know... and I hope you feel better!

Best,

Bruce Barber

'Once again the top rated entry will be given "immunity" and a guaranteed slot in the next round' - then what's the point?
Sorry and all respect to the initial idea, but one slot is clearly filled due to Facebook, forum-board and on-campus rallying and strategic ballot-stuffing. I hope that next year you reconsider the strategy, as it appears a shame that some contestants are clearly without a chance because of this flaw in the competition. And good luck to the 'final two', who got there out of merit alone.

I am very interested in the far-reaching and imaginative thought that is involved in the digital distribution discussion. My only concern is that there is a glaring omission in the attendees at these discussions -- independent producers who are responsible for the best and brightest of public radio's most innovative work. Of course, PRX is at the center of distributing independent work and, as a fellow Board Member of AIR, Jake, I know you are sensitive to this issue. Nonetheless, I think it would be good to INCLUDE the Executive Director of AIR as an active participant in discussions about how digital distribution of content will occur in public broadcasting.

Cheers,

[...] This is the post conference write-up I did for the Sunlight Foundation taken from here. On January 15th, 2007, the Sunlight Foundation in cooperation with Harvard’s Berkman Center for Internet & Society held an all day workgroup entitled “Local Political Information in an Internet Era”. The session brought together bloggers and organizations, in an attempt to share data, goals and thoughts. For addition coverage see what other participants had to say, Ethan Zuckerman, Jake Shapiro, John Palfrey, Dan Gillmor, David Weinberger and more. [...]

hey, that link is still null, and this a month later - what gives? Also, just FYI, the Naked Trucker show is not really 'new' any more... And if this is so up-to-the-minute, why can't I find this on Google? I read about this in the PW Daily email, just saw the name mentioned and because it was listed as an NPR show (oops, maybe they meant PRI?), I decided to look it up, because I knew it was new. But alas, on Google your show's own site does not even make the first page. All I get are blogs and the individual stations that list it. You guys need some SEO/SEM help fer sure... If you want to aim for the x-ers, ya gotta have this stuff right! ;-)
