Second Life > Infinite Mind > Suzanne Vega

Susan Vega performed at a public radio industry conference (not the hippest gig) a few years back and was mesmerizing. She also hosted a public radio series called American Mavericks which I confess I never ended up hearing, probably because it wasn’t carried in Boston (perhaps time for PRX long tail revival?).

Anyway, procrastinating on other work and browsing YouTube I came across a composite of a virtual Vega appearance in Second Life on the Infinite Mind public radio program (they evidently were inspired to be the first radio program to set up shop in Second Life after attending the Beyond Broadcast conference we helped organize last year).

Kudos to the Infinite Mind for taking the leap.

Third Coast International Audio Festival 2006

(version of this also posted on the PRX blog )

The PRX crew descended upon Chicago en masse, all 7 of us (9 if you include PRX alumns Brendan Greeley and Steve Schultze), exceeded only by the omnipresent Salt Institute Mafia, which numbered something like 29!

For blogging coverage of Third Coast check out Transom.org’s special coverage.

And make sure to drop by Third Coast’s audio library to check out excerpts from this year’s amazing line up of award winners.

The annual PRX Zeitfunk Party was a big hit again, and some incriminating Flickr photos will soon be available…

Congrats to Julie, Johanna, Roman and the whole crew for another spectacularly nourishing event to sustain us for another year.

college media in st louis

Landed in St Louis where I’m presenting at the National College Media Convention (which really needs a website overhaul), and where it’s rainy and cold and nasty enough that they called the game and wet, disappointed Cardinals fans hit the bars.

This is my first time at this event, not really sure what to expect but it was good to meet up with Doug Mitchell from NPR and his crew of mentors and students from Next Generation.

I also stumbled across the College Media Innovation blog which kindly highlighted all the new media sessions including my own (Thursday at noon).

We’ve always wanted to get more college radio stations involved in PRX, both acquiring and offering programs, but it’s a challenge for most of them with the semester-to-semester turnover and the dominance of spinning music instead of more public affairs or documentary programming. Perhaps the social media side of things will bridge the gap and “podcast to broadcast” will connect the dots.

Halloween Scream Stream

We’ve been playing around with flash mp3 players, working on some interesting updates to PRX and other projects.

So to put it to the test and take advantage of a good “date peg” and an excellent collection of audio, for one week only here’s the Halloween Scream Stream from PRX: a ghastly collection of audio from the crypt.

Bonus: you can go here to add the player to your own site or blog.
