Cyberone: Law in the Court of Public Opinion

Professor Charles Nesson - Berkman Center founder and a Beyond Broadcaster by nature - is offering a new course at Harvard Law School this fall along with his daughter Rebecca. It is called Cyberone: Law in the Court of Public Opinion and it’s shaping up to be something extraordinary.

Charlie is always testing the boundaries of what he likes to call the rhetorical space of the Internet, or the “integrated media space” that presents entirely new opportunities for education, information, media, thought, expression.

Our course is titled Cyber One: Law in the Court of Public Opinion. The subject matter of the course is the creation and delivery of persuasive argument in the new integrated media space constituted by the Internet and other new technologies. Our premise is that “First World” and corporate domination of entertainment media, laws, and news can be balanced by the voices of individuals, groups and universities who use new media intelligently. We challenge students to attempt this themselves by choosing an issue of concern to them and using the media we study to make their case for change in the court of public opinion.

This course invites participation from beyond the Harvard Law School campus by opening up the course materials, preparation, and audio/video lectures as well as creating a Second Life presence that Charlie does a great job promoting in this this video.

Try poking around the course website now and then check back as more materials are posted. There are also some treats in the wiki syllabus. In fact just seconds ago browsing around I’ve learned that I’m evidently scheduled as a guest speaker on October 30th…
